New KA - A Step In The Right Direction?
The new Ford Ka was a long time coming - 12 years in fact. Its predecessor sold like hotcakes so Ford must have been worried about launching a new model.
So, what's changed?
The new Ka has a totally different look, it is bolder, more compact and a bit more chunky - but it still retains its quirky edge that first caused a stir when the original was launched back in 1996.
The new model also comes in a range of 12 new colours from lime-green "jump" to turquoise "scuba." There are many bold and exciting colours to choose from all of which are bound to make you stand out on the roads.
The interior has changed too - for the better. The old model was rather basic and lacked a glove box - something you find yourself missing when you don't have one! I'm glad to say the new version has a glovebox! It also has a sporty-looking high-set five-speed gearbox which definitely makes the inside look more interesting.
There is enough space in the car for four adults, the new version is exactly the same length as the original but it is 10cm taller which is good for all the tall people wanting a sleek city-car. It is has primarily been amended for safety reasons and will also offer you a better view over the bonnet.
There are four trim levels available with the new version, Studio, Style, Style + and Zetec. The basic Studio model comes with a CD & MP3 player, body-coloured bumpers and tinted glass. The more advanced Zetec comes fitted with 15" multispoke alloy wheels, premium velour mats and privacy glass. The new Ka also comes in diesel!
Looks-wise the new Ka is definitely more generalised than its predecessor and won't stand out from the crowd as much, but it is certainly stylish and trendy and would make for a perfect city car. It is fun and fresh and only time will tell if it enjoys as much success as the much-loved original Ka. The Ka is lightweight and agile and is excellent for nipping round towns and cities.
While it took a long time for them to get round to launching it, Ford are throwing a lot of advertising behind the new KA. This little car is crucial to their survival given their recent brush with bankruptcy and, knowing that there's a market for the small and economical motor, they're pushing it hard.
So, the new model doesn't look as distinctive as the original from the outside but the interior is certainly a vast improvement - only time will tell.
